1959 On December 11, 1959, former first baseman Jim Bottomley dies of a heart attack at the age of 59 in St. Louis, Missouri, where he"d starred for many years with the Cardinals. Bottomley earned election to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1974.

1951 On December 11, 1951, Joe DiMaggio announces his retirement. "The Yankee Clipper" ends his career with a batting average of .325 and 361 home runs. In deciding to retire, DiMaggio passes up the chance to play for a potential salary of $100,000.
