2001 On October 31, 2001, the Yankees rally to win a thrilling World Series game at Yankee Stadium. Down a pair in the bottom of the ninth, Tino Martinez crushes a two-run homer to tie the game off Arizona"s Byun-Jung Kim. The Yankees will win in extra-innings on a homer by Derek Jeter.

1973 On October 31, 1973, future Hall of Famer Tom Seaver of the New York Mets wins the National League's Cy Young Award. Seaver, who finished the regular season with a record of 19-10, becomes the first pitcher in major league history to win the award with fewer than 20 victories.

1900 On October 31, 1900, future Hall of Famer Cal Hubbard is born in Keytesville, Missouri. A standout umpire in the major leagues starting in 1936, Hubbard also gained election to the Pro Football Hall of Fame and College Football Hall of Fame, based on his stellar career as a defensive lineman in the 1920s and 1930s.
