Today in Baseball History: September 7th

2007

On September 7, 2007, Curtis Granderson of the Detroit Tigers became just the sixth player in baseball history to hit at least 20 doubles, triples, and home runs in the same season. Granderson slugged his 20th homer in the seventh inning against the Mariners at Comerica Park. The Tiger leadoff man joined Frank Schulte, Jim Bottomley, Jeff Heath, Willie Mays, and George Brett in the exclusive club.

1993
On September 7, 1993, Mark Whiten of the St. Louis Cardinals ties a major league record by driving in 12 runs in the second game of a doubleheader. Whiten's explosion matches the single game total of Jim Bottomley, who had a 12-RBI game in 1924. Whiten also ties Nate Colbert's record of 13 RBIs in a doubleheader.

1986

On September 7, 1986, rookie Greg Maddux wins his first big league game, taming the Reds, 11-3, at Wrigley Field. Maddux, who will go on to win more than 300 games in his stellar career, pitches a complete game, allowing 11 hits and three earned runs.

1984
On September 7, 1984, New York Mets right-hander Dwight Gooden sets a National League record for most strikeouts by a rookie. Gooden's 228th strikeout surpasses the record set by Grover Cleveland Alexander in 1911...

1945

On September 7, 1945, Washington's Joe Kuhel hits the season's first and only home run by a Senators' player at Griffith Stadium. Even Kuhel's shot fails to clear the fences.

1931
On September 7, 1931, the oddly named Van Lingle Mungo makes a memorable debut for the Brooklyn Dodgers. Mungo shuts out the Boston Braves, 2-0, while striking out 13 batters. At the plate, Mungo collects a single and a triple...

1908
On September 7, 1908, Walter Johnson of the Washington Senators, pitching in his first full major league season, hurls his third shutout in four days against the New York Highlanders. The "Big Train" two-hits the Highlanders and outduels fellow Hall of Famer Jack Chesbro, 4-0.
