2005
On July 31, 2005, Wade Boggs and Ryne Sandberg are inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in a ceremony at Cooperstown.

1996
On July 31, 1996, the New York Yankees acquire slugging DH/first baseman Cecil "Big Daddy" Fielder from the Detroit Tigers for outfielder Ruben Sierra and minor league pitcher Matt Drews. Fielder will hit 13 home runs for the Yankees, helping them to the World Championship.

1990
On July 31, 1990, Hall of Famer Nolan Ryan of the Texas Rangers wins the 300th game of his career. After failing to reach the milestone in his previous start, the 43-year-old Ryan defeats the Milwaukee Brewers, 11-3. Ryan allows only one earned run in seven and two-thirds innings against a lineup that includes Paul Molitor, Robin Yount, Gary Sheffield, and Dave Parker.

1983
On July 31, 1983, Juan Marichal, Brooks Robinson, George Kell, and manager Walter Alston are inducted into the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown. Marichal becomes the first Latin-born pitcher to gain enshrinement in the Hall of Fame.

1978
On July 31, 1978, Pete Rose of the Cincinnati Reds extends his hitting streak to 44 games, tying Willie Keeler's National League record. Rose singles against Hall of Famer Phil Niekro in Cincinnati's 3-2 win over the Atlanta Braves.

1972
On July 31, 1972, Dick Allen of the Chicago White Sox becomes only the seventh player in major league history to hit two inside-the-park home runs in a game. Allen's two circuit clouts, which come against Bert Blyleven of the Minnesota Twins, help lift the White Sox to an 8-1 victory.

1955
On July 31, 1955, Milwaukee Braves first baseman Joe Adcock suffers a broken arm exactly one year after hitting four home runs in a game. Adcock is injured on a pitch thrown by Jim Hearn of the Giants, forcing him to the sidelines for the rest of the season.

1954
On July 31, 1954, Milwaukee Braves slugger Joe Adcock sets a major league record by accumulating 18 total bases in a single game. Adcock hits four home runs and a double in the Braves' 15-7 win over the Brooklyn Dodgers. In 2002, Dodgers outfielder Shawn Green will break Adcock"s mark for total bases, racking up 19, also in Milwaukee.

1943
On July 31, 1943, the Brooklyn Dodgers trade onetime National League MVP Dolf Camilli to the New York Giants for three players. Opting to retire instead of reporting to his new team, Camilli will make a brief return to the major leagues in 1945.

1930
On July 31, 1930, Lou Gehrig of the New York Yankees drives in eight runs with a grand slam and two doubles. Gehrig's barrage leads the Yankees to a 14-13 win over the rival Boston Red Sox.

1891
On July 31, 1891, Giants" hurler Amos Rusie hurls a no-hitter against the Brooklyn Grooms. Rusie, known as "The Hoosier Thunderbolt," was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1977.
