1993 On March 22, 1993, two Cleveland Indians pitchers are killed in a spring training boating accident. A motor boat strikes a pier, killing 27-year-old Steve Olin and 31-year-old Tim Crews. Another player, pitcher Bobby Ojeda, is badly injured but will recover and attempt a comeback.

1991 On March 22, 1991, a 1910 Honus Wagner baseball card sells for over $450,000. Hockey legend Wayne Gretzky and Los Angeles Kings owner Bruce McNall purchase the rare card at a Sotheby's auction.

1981 On March 22, 1981, American League President Lee MacPhail suspends Baltimore Orioles manager Earl Weaver for removing his team from the field and forfeiting a spring training game. Weaver's suspension will last three days.

1976 On March 22, 1976, the California Angels' groundskeeper finds hundreds of marijuana plants growing in the outfield at Anaheim Stadium. The culprits? Most likely rock concert fans who attended a recent performance at the stadium by "The Who."

1972 On March 22, 1972, the American League approves the sale of the Cleveland Indians by Vernon Stouffer. A group headed up by businessman Nick Mileti purchases the team for $9.7 million. Mileti also owns the Cleveland Cavaliers of the National Basketball Association and the Cleveland Barons of the National Hockey League.

1972 On March 22, 1972, the New York Yankees make one of the best trades in franchise history. The Yankees acquire reliever Sparky Lyle from the Boston Red Sox for infielder Danny Cater. In seven seasons with the Yankees, the colorful Lyle will record 141 saves. He will also win the Cy Young Award in 1977 while helping the Yankees to back-to-back world titles.
