Today in Baseball History: November 5th

1997 On November 5, 1997, on the same day that Davey Johnson is named American League Manager of the Year, he steps down as skipper of the Baltimore Orioles, due to a controversy over money paid to a charity his wife works for. After Baltimore owner Peter Angelos expresses displeasure over how the charity issue is handled, Johnson resigns, despite having led the club to the best record in the AL in 1997.

1996 On November 5, 1996, Yankee shortstop Derek Jeter is named American League Rookie of the Year, winning the award unanimously. He becomes the eighth Yankee to earn the honor.

1976 On November 5, 1976, right-hander Jim Palmer wins his third Cy Young Award, finishing ahead of Detroit rookie Mark Fidrych. Palmer was 22-13 with a 2.51 ERA in more than 300 innings for the Orioles.

1940 On November 5, 1940, Hall of Famer Walter Johnson loses a bid to become a member of the U.S. House of Representatives. Johnson, a Republican candidate from Maryland, entered the Hall of Fame in 1936.
