1988
On November 2, 1988, for the third straight season a member of the Oakland A"s is named American League Rookie of the Year, as shortstop Walt Weiss wins the award. The previous two season, sluggers Jose Canseco and Mark McGwire had won the award.

1977
On November 2, 1977, receiving 17 of the 24 first-place votes, Steve Carlton wins his second National League Cy Young Award. The Phillies" ace posted a record of 23-10 with 198 strikeouts and a 2.64 ERA, helping the club to their second straight NL East title.

1974
On November 2, 1974, Hank Aaron's career with the Atlanta Braves comes to an end. The Braves deal the all-time home run king to the Milwaukee Brewers for outfielder Dave May and minor league pitcher Roger Alexander.

1972
On November 2, 1972, Steve Carlton wins his first Cy Young Award. "Lefty" won 27 games for the last-place Phillies, who won just 59 games all season.

1971
On November 2, 1971, Baltimore right-hander Pat Dobson hurls a 2-0 no-hitter against the Yomiuri Giants during an exhibition tour in Japan. Dobson"s gem is one of 12 victories for the Orioles in their 18-game schedule against Japan League teams.

1960
On November 2, 1960, in the second closest MVP vote ever, Roger Maris narrowly defeats teammate Mickey Mantle, by three votes, 225-222. The closest MVP race occurred in 1947, when Joe DiMaggio edged Ted Williams by a single vote.

1938
On November 2, 1938, Boston Red Sox slugger Jimmie Foxx wins his third Most Valuable Player Award. Foxx hit 50 homers and drove in 175 runs, while batting .349 with 139 runs scored. He also won the award in 1932 and 1933 with the Philadelphia A"s.

1937
On November 2, 1937, Detroit second baseman Charlie Gehringer is named Most Valuable Player of the American League. Gehringer led the league in batting with a .371 mark.
