2006
On November 17, 2006, the Oakland A"s announce Bob Geren as their manager, replacing Ken Macha, who had been fired at the end of the season. Geren was Macha"s bench coach and had been in the Oakland organization for eight years prior to his new role.

2006
On November 17, 2006, Dodgers" third baseman Bill Mueller retires after 11 seasons. A severe injury to Mueller"s right knee prompted his retirement. Mueller accepts a job as assistant to the Dodgers" General Manager.

1975
On November 17, 1975, the Texas Rangers trade future Hall of Famer Ferguson Jenkins to the Boston Red Sox for outfielder Juan Beniquez and two pitchers. A seven-time 20-game winner, Jenkins will win 12 games for the Red Sox in 1976.

1965
On November 17, 1965, major league owners unanimously elect General William "Spike" Eckert as commissioner, succeeding Ford Frick. Eckert, a retired Lt. General in the United States Air Force, will serve only one term as commissioner before being replaced by Bowie Kuhn.

1964
On November 17, 1964, the New York Mets name former New York Yankees great Yogi Berra to their coaching staff. Berra signs a two-year contract and will work under another former Yankee legend, Casey Stengel, who is now the Mets' manager.

1947
On November 17, 1947, the Boston Red Sox and St. Louis Browns engineer a blockbuster eight-player deal. The key player is shortstop Vern Stephens, who comes to Boston after hitting .279 with 15 home runs and 83 RBIs. The Sox also acquire 11-game winner Jack Kramer while giving the Browns six players and $300,000 in cash.

1944
On November 17, 1944, future Hall of Famer George Thomas Seaver is born in Fresno, California. Better known as Tom, Seaver will make the major leagues in 1967 as a member of the New York Mets.

1913
On November 17, 1913, the Brooklyn Dodgers fire Bill Dahlen as their manager, replacing him with future Hall of Famer Wilbert Robinson. The Dodgers will rename their franchise the "Robins" in honor of their new skipper.
