Today in Baseball History: September 18th

2006
On September 18, 2006, the Dodgers stage an amazing comeback to defeat the Padres, relying on the long ball. Down by four in the bottom of the ninth, Jeff Kent led off with a homer. He was followed by J.D. Drew, who also homered. The Padres brought in closer Trevor Hoffman, who was greeted on his first pitch by a home run off the bat of Russell Martin to close the gap to 9-8. Amazingly, Marlon Anderson clubbed Hoffman"s next pitch into the seats for the Dodgers fourth straight home run, tying the game. The Padres scored in the top of the tenth, but the Dodgers, who entered the game with the fewest home runs in the league, struck again with an unlikely weapon. After a walk, Nomar Garciaparra hit a walk-off, two-run homer to win the game, 11-9. With the win, the Dodgers stay one-half game back of the Padres in the NL West. It"s just the fourth time in major league history that a teamhit four consecutive home runs.
