1984




On September 12, 1984, Dwight Gooden of the New York Mets breaks the major league record for most strikeouts by a rookie. Gooden, who fans 16 Pittsburgh Pirates on the way to a 2-0 victory, surpasses Herb Score's 1955 total of 245 strikeouts.

1979
On September 12, 1979, future Hall of Famer Carl Yastrzemski of the Boston Red Sox collects his 3,000th hit against Jim Beattie during a 9-2 win over the rival New York Yankees. Yaz becomes the first American League player to reach 3,000 hits and 400 home runs.
