2006



On August 30, 2006, Boston right-hander Curt Schilling fans Oakland slugger Nick Swisher with his trademark splitter to record the 3,000th strikeout of his career. Schilling becomes the 14th pitcher to reach the milestone.

1999



On August 30, 1999, Edgardo Alfonzo of the New York Mets becomes only the fifth player in major league history to hit three home runs while going 6-for-6 in a game. Alfonzo's performance, which highlights a 17-1 rout of the Houston Astros, includes a double, six runs scored, and five RBIs.

1978
On August 30, 1978, Sadaharu Oh of the Tokyo Giants hits the 800th home run of his career. Oh, the world's all-time home run king, had previously broken Hank Aaron's record of 755 home runs.

1974



On August 30, 1974, Dave Nelson of the Texas Rangers steals second, third base, and home plate in the same inning, becoming only one of a handful of players to accomplish the feat in the 20th century. Despite Nelson's parade of stolen bases, the Rangers lose their game to the Cleveland Indians, 7-3.

1965
On August 30, 1965, one of the game's most legendary figures, New York Mets manager Casey Stengel, announces his retirement. Doctors had advised Stengel to step down after suffering a broken hip in a bathroom fall on July 25. Stengel will gain induction to the Hall of Fame the next year.

1953
On August 30, 1953, the Milwaukee Braves set a National League record by hitting eight home runs in the first game of a doubleheader against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Jim Pendleton leads the way with three home runs in a 19-4 demolition of the Pirates at Forbes Field.

1952



On August 30, 1952,Hall of Fame shortstop Arky Vaughan  dies at the age of 40 when his fishing boat capsizes. Vaughan batted .318 over a 14-year career with the Pittsburgh Pirates and Brooklyn Dodgers.

1951
On August 30, 1951, the New York Yankees acquire veteran pitcher Johnny Sain from the Boston Braves for $50,000 and young righthander Lew Burdette. Sain will help New York win pennants from 1951-1954, while Burdette will go on to win 179 games with the Braves over 13 seasons. In the 1957 World Series, Burdette will haunt his former team, beating the Yankees three times as the Braves claim the championship.

1918
On August 30, 1918, future Hall of Famer Ted Williams is born in San Diego, California. "The Splendid Splinter" will make his major league debut in 1939, marking the start of a 19-year career with the Boston Red Sox. Williams will win election to Cooperstown in 1966.

1905
On August 30, 1905, future Hall of Famer Ty Cobb makes his major league debut for the Detroit Tigers. In his first big league at-bat, Cobb doubles against Jack Chesbro of the New York Yankees, as part of a 5-3 Tigers win.
