Today in Baseball History: August 27th

1988 On August 27, 1988, manager Tommy Lasorda records his 1,000th victory, as the Los Angeles Dodgers defeat the Philadelphia Phillies, 4-2. Lasorda will win a total of 1,613 games, before gaining election to the Hall of Fame in 1997.

1982 On August 27, 1982, Rickey Henderson of the Oakland A's breaks Lou Brock's single-season stolen base record. Henderson steals his 119th base, surpassing Brock's total of 118 thefts. Henderson, who steals three more bases in a 5-4 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers, will finish the season with 130 stolen bases.

1978 On August 27, 1978, Joe Morgan of the Cincinnati Reds hits his 200th career home run. The future Hall of Fame second baseman becomes the first major league player to reach the 200-home run and 500-stolen base milestones.

1977 On August 27, 1977, Toby Harrah and Bump Wills of the Texas Rangers hit back-to-back inside-the-park home runs against the New York Yankees. Harrah and Wills connect on consecutive pitches in the Rangers' 8-2 win at Yankee Stadium.

1972 On August 27, 1972, the Oakland A's acquire outfielder Matty Alou, who is batting .314, from the St. Louis Cardinals for two players. Alou's clutch hitting in September will help the A's hold off the Chicago White Sox for the American League West title. The A's will eventually win the World Series.

1963 On August 27, 1963, the San Francisco Giants unleash an impressive display of home run hitting against the St. Louis Cardinals. Willie Mays, Orlando Cepeda, and Felipe Alou hit back-to-back-to-back home runs in the third inning of a 7-2 win.
