Today in Baseball History: August 19th

1992 On August 19, 1992, Bret Boone becomes part of major league baseball's first three-generation family when he makes his debut at second base for the Seattle Mariners. Boone picks up a single in four at-bats. Boone's father, Bob, played from 1972 to 1990, and his grandfather, Ray, played from 1948 to 1960.

1965 On August 19, 1965, Jim Maloney of the Cincinnati Reds pitches a 10-inning no-hitter against the Chicago Cubs. Maloney wins the game, 1-0, on a home run by shortstop Leo "Chico" Cardenas. Earlier in the season, Maloney pitched no-hit ball for 10 innings before losing to the New York Mets, 1-0, in the 11th inning.

1957 On August 19, 1957, the board of directors of the New York Giants votes to move the franchise to San Francisco. The Giants will join the rival Brooklyn Dodgers on the West Coast, beginning with the 1958 season. The Giants will initially play games at Seals Stadium before moving into Candlestick Park.

1951 On August 19, 1951, owner Bill Veeck sends three-foot, seven-inch Eddie Gaedel to bat for his St. Louis Browns. Gaedel, who had been signed by Veeck in perhaps his most famous publicity stunt, walks on four pitches from Detroit Tigers left-hander Bob Cain. Gaedel, who is removed for pinch-runner Jim Delsing, will be banned from baseball two days later.

1921 On August 19, 1921, in the second game of a doubleheader, Tiger player/manager Ty Cobb bangs out a single for his 3,000th career base hit. The milestone hit comes off Boston"s Elmer Myers at Navin Field in Detroit. At 34 years old, Cobb is the youngest man to reach the 3,000-hit mark.

1909 On August 19, 1909, the Philadelphia Phillies set a major league record when they experience a rainout for the 10th consecutive day.
