Earlier in the season, Maloney pitched no-hit ball for 10 innings before losing to the New York Mets, 1-0, in the 11th inning. |

| 1951 On August 19, 1951, owner Bill Veeck sends three-foot, seven-inch Eddie Gaedel to bat for his St. Louis Browns. Gaedel, who had been signed by Veeck in perhaps his most famous publicity stunt, walks on four pitches from Detroit Tigers left-hander Bob Cain. Gaedel, who is removed for pinch-runner Jim Delsing, will be banned from baseball two days later. |
| 1921 On August 19, 1921, in the second game of a doubleheader, Tiger player/manager Ty Cobb bangs out a single for his 3,000th career base hit. The milestone hit comes off Boston"s Elmer Myers at Navin Field in Detroit. At 34 years old, Cobb is the youngest man to reach the 3,000-hit mark. |
