2006




On August 18, 2006, Angel pitcher Jared Weaver wins his ninth game since being called up to the big leagues in May. With a 9-0 record to start his career, the righty becomes the first hurler since Whitey Ford to start his career with that many wins without a loss. Weaver will suffer a defeat in his next start.

1983
On August 18, 1983, the New York Yankees and Kansas City Royals play the conclusion of the "Pine Tar Game." With the Royals leading 5-4, Dan Quisenberry retires New York to end the game in front of only 1,245 fans at Yankee Stadium.

1977




On August 18, 1977, Dodger ace Don Sutton hurls a one-hit gem against the Giants. It is Sutton"s fifth one-hitter, tying a National League record. The lone hit comes with two down in the eighth frame. Sutton"s other one-hitters came in 1969, 1971, 1974, and 1975.

1975
On August 18, 1975, the Hall of Fame welcomes five new members. Earl Averill, Bucky Harris, Billy Herman, Judy Johnson, and Ralph Kiner are honored at Induction Ceremonies in Cooperstown. Kiner gained election to the Hall in his final year of eligibility.

1967
On August 18, 1967, Kansas City A's owner Charlie Finley suspends pitcher Lew Krausse for "conduct unbecoming a major leaguer." Finley became angered when he heard reports of Krausse's allegedly rowdy behavior aboard a team flight. Two days later, Finley will extend blame to manager Alvin Dark, who is fired and replaced by Luke Appling.

1967



On August 18, 1967, Boston Red Sox star Tony Conigliaro is hit in the face with a fastball thrown by California's Jack Hamilton. Having suffered a fractured left eye socket and broken cheekbone, "Tony C." will not return until 1969.

1934
On August 18, 1934, future Hall of Famer Roberto Clemente is born in Carolina, Puerto Rico. In 1955, Clemente will arrive in the major leagues with the Pittsburgh Pirates, and will hit .317 with 240 home runs over an 18-year career. In 1973, Clemente will gain posthumous election to the Hall of Fame.

1909
On August 18, 1909, New York Giants manager John McGraw names Arlie Latham as a coach. Latham becomes the first full-time coach in major league history.
