2006



On August 13, 2006, for the first time in baseball history, a 300-game winner faces a batter who has hit 700 home runs. 328-game winner Greg Maddux of the Dodgers faces Barry Bonds (723 homers) of the Giants. Maddux wins the battle, holding Bonds to 0-for-2 with a walk in eight shutout innings.

2006
On August 13, 2006, the 27-game hitting streak of Boston's Manny Ramirez comes to an end, against the Orioles. The streak was the sixth-longest in Red Sox history.

1995



On August 13, 1995, Hall of Famer Mickey Mantle dies from liver cancer at the age of 63. One of the most popular players in the history of the New York Yankees, Mantle hit 536 home runs over an 18-year career. He won three American League MVP awards and captured the Triple Crown in 1956.

1987
On August 13, 1987, Paul Molitor slugged a home run with two out in the ninth inning, to extend his hitting streak to 28 games. Molitor"s streak would reach 39 before it came to an end. Molitor was elected to the HOF in 2004.

1979
On August 13, 1979, Lou Brock of the St. Louis Cardinals collects his 3,000th hit. The future Hall of Famer reaches the milestone against his former team - the Chicago Cubs - with a fourth-inning single against righthander Dennis Lamp.

1972



On August 13, 1972, Detroit Tigers manager Billy Martin picks his team's lineup out of a hat. The slow-footed Norm Cash is picked to bat leadoff while the weak-hitting Eddie Brinkman ends up batting cleanup. The new lineup produces a 3-2 win in the first game of a doubleheader. Later, Martin will use the unconventional method while he is managing the Oakland A"s.

1972
On August 13, 1972, former major league executive George Weiss dies at the age of 78, one year after his induction to the Hall of Fame. Weiss worked for the New York Yankees from 1932 to 1960 before finishing his career with the rival New York Mets.

1969
On August 13, 1969, Bowie Kuhn is given a seven-year contract to serve as commissioner. Kuhn had been working as interim commissioner after major league owners couldn't decide between the two leading candidates, Mike Burke and Charles "Chub" Feeney.

1963



On August 13, 1963, Warren Spahn sets a major league record for the most strikeouts by a lefthanded pitcher. Spahn strikes out Al Ferrara of the Los Angeles Dodgers to surpass Hall of Famer Rube Waddell on the all-time list.

1962
On August 13, 1962, future major leaguer Bert Campaneris pitches both lefthanded and righthanded during a relief appearance in the Florida State League. Campaneris will eventually make the major leagues - as a shortstop.

1939
On August 13, 1939, Red Ruffing of the New York Yankees bangs out four hits and pitches a 21-0 shutout over the Philadelphia Athletics. Babe Dahlgren and Joe DiMaggio hit two home runs apiece, including matching inside-the-park home runs.

1906
On August 13, 1906, the Brooklyn Superbas knock Chicago Cubs pitcher Jack "Brakeman" Taylor out of the box in the third inning, ending his streak of 187 consecutive complete games. Taylor's streak, which began in 1901, encompasses over 1,700 innings.
