1990



On July 6, 1990, Whitey Herzog resigns as manager of the St. Louis Cardinals after 10 years on the job. Former Redbirds skipper Red Schoendienst will replace Herzog on a temporary basis until Joe Torre is hired as a fulltime replacement on August 1. Herzog led the Cardinals to the World Championship in 1982, and NL pennants in 1985 and 1987.

1986
On July 6, 1986, Bob Horner of the Atlanta Braves ties a major league record by hitting four home runs in a game against the Montreal Expos. Horner hits three solo blasts and a three-run shot, but the Braves lose the game, 11-8.

1983
On July 6, 1983, the American League and National League stage the 50th anniversary of the All-Star Game. The American League sets an All-Star record for runs by pounding the National League, 13-3, as Fred Lynn clubs the first grand slam in All-Star history. The game marks the first win for the AL since 1971.

1970



On July 6, 1970, Felix Millan of the Atlanta Braves goes 6-for-6 in a game against the San Francisco Giants. Millan, known for his unusually exaggerated "choked-up" style of hitting, drives in four runs in the Braves' 12-4 thrashing of the Giants.

1966
On July 6, 1966, Baltimore Orioles slugger Boog Powell sets a major league record by collecting 11 RBIs in a doubleheader against the Kansas City A's. Powell hits two home runs in the first game, including a grand slam.

1947



On July 6, 1947, Larry Doby makes his first start as a major league player. Doby, the first black player in the history of the American League, plays all nine innings at first base in the Cleveland Indians' 6-5 loss to the Chicago White Sox. Doby will bat .326 in 1950, and will lead the AL in home runs in 1952 and '54.

1933
On July 6, 1933, the first major league All-Star Game is played at Comiskey Park. Babe Ruth hits a two-run home run to give the American League a 4-2 win over the National League. Connie Mack manages the AL team while John McGraw comes out of retirement to manage the NL.

1932



On July 6, 1932, Billy Jurges of the Chicago Cubs is shot twice during a scuffle with his girlfriend. Jurges, who is shot in the hand and the shoulder, decides not to file charges against Violet Popovich Valli, a local nightclub and theater singer.

1929
On July 6, 1929, the St. Louis Cardinals set a modern major league record for runs by routing the Philadelphia Phillies, 28-6. The Redbirds score 10 runs in both the first and fifth innings and collect 28 hits on the day.

1917
On July 6, 1917, White Sox hurlers Red Faber and Jim Scott halt Ty Cobb"s 35-game hitting streak. Faber won 254 games in his Hall of Fame career, with Cobb hitting .335 against him.
