1999
On June 25, 1999, St. Louis rookie Jose Jimenez twirls a 1-0 no-hitter over the Arizona Diamondbacks. Jimenez outduels Randy Johnson (who records his 2,500th career strikeout in the game) at Arizona. Two months later, Jimenez"s fortune turns upside-down when he is sent to the minor leagues.

1988



On June 25, 1988, Cal Ripken Jr. of the Baltimore Orioles plays in his 1,000th consecutive game, a 10-3 loss to the Boston Red Sox. On September 5, 1995, Ripken will break Lou Gehrig's all-time record of 2,130 consecutive games played.

1986
On June 25, 1986, future Hall of Famer Steve Carlton is given his unconditional release by the Philadelphia Phillies. The 41-year-old left-hander will sign the San Francisco Giants, marking the start of a journeyman three-year period in which Carlton will pitch for four different teams…

1973
On June 25, 1973, the San Francisco Giants activate pitching coach Don McMahon. Remarkably, the 43-year-old will go 4-0 with six saves and a spectacular ERA of 1.48. Despite his surprising success as a reliever, the Giants will release McMahon on October 9.

1971


On June 25, 1971, actor Kurt Russell makes his professional baseball debut by collecting a double, single, and two stolen bases for the Bend Rainbows of the Northwest League. Russell, a second baseman and shortstop, will hit .313 over parts of three seasons before a severe shoulder injury ends his playing career.

1961
On June 25, 1961, the Baltimore Orioles and Los Angeles Angels set a major league record by combining to use 16 pitchers during a 14-inning game. The Orioles win the game, 9-8, on Ron Hansen's extra-inning home run.

1953



On June 25, 1953, future Hall of Famer Al Kaline makes his major league debut for the Detroit Tigers. The 18-year-old outfielder comes in for defense, replacing Jim Delsing in center field. Kaline will remain in the major leagues through the end of the 1974 season.

1937
On June 25, 1937, Augie Galan of the Chicago Cubs becomes the first player in National League history to switch-hit home runs in the same game. Galan's two home runs help the Cubs defeat the Brooklyn Dodgers, 11-2. James "Tex" Carleton pitches a five-hitter for Chicago…

1934



On June 25, 1934, Lou Gehrig hits for the cycle as the New York Yankees pound the Chicago White Sox, 11-2. Pitcher John Broaca ties a major league record by striking out five consecutive times at the plate, but still picks up the win for New York. Broaca will hit .091 over his five-year career…

1928
On June 25, 1928, future Hall of Famer Fred Lindstrom bangs out a major league record nine hits in a doubleheader sweep of the Phillies.
