Today in Baseball History: May 14th

1996

On May 14, 1996, Dwight Gooden throws a no-hitter for the Yankees against the Mariners, at Yankee Stadium. The right-hander wins the game, 2-0, in hurling the first no-hit game of his career.

1989
On May 14, 1989, Benny Distefano of the Pittsburgh Pirates becomes the first lefthanded catcher to appear in a major league game in nine years. Distefano comes in to catch the ninth inning of a game against the Atlanta Braves. In 1980, Mike Squires, a lefthanded throwing first baseman, went behind the plate for the Chicago White Sox.

1986

On May 14, 1986, California Angels slugger Reggie Jackson hits his 537th career home run to move past Mickey Mantle on the all-time list. Jackson delivers the milestone blast against Roger Clemens of the Boston Red Sox.

1978
On May 14, 1978, Dave Kingman of the Chicago Cubs hits three home runs, including a game-winning three-run blast in the 15th inning against the Los Angeles Dodgers. The game marks the second time in his career that "King Kong" has hit three homers and driven in eight runs in a game at Dodger Stadium.

1972
On May 14, 1972, future Hall of Famer Willie Mays blasts a game-winning home run for the New York Mets against the San Francisco Giants. Just three days earlier, the Mets had acquired Mays from the Giants for pitcher Charlie Williams and cash.

1967
On May 14, 1967, Mickey Mantle of the New York Yankees joins the 500-home run club when he connects against Stu Miller of the Baltimore Orioles. Mantle becomes the sixth major leaguer to reach 500, joining Babe Ruth, Willie Mays, Jimmie Foxx, Ted Williams, and Mel Ott. Mantle's home run helps the Yankees to a 6-5 win.

1963

On May 14, 1963, future Hall of Famer Carl Yastrzemski hits for the cycle against the Detroit Tigers. Yastrzemski's historic day includes two home runs and five RBIs, but doesn't prevent the Boston Red Sox from losing the game, 12-8. Willie Horton hits two home runs for the Tigers.

1941
On May 14, 1941, the Dean brothers suffer setbacks in their careers. The Chicago Cubs release Dizzy while the New York Giants demote Paul to the minor leagues. Paul will return to the major leagues two years later, but Dizzy won't come return until 1947, when he makes a one-game comeback with the St. Louis Browns.

1940
On May 14, 1940, future Hall of Famer Jimmie Foxx hits what is believed to be the longest home run in the history of Comiskey Park. The Boston Red Sox' slugger hits a titanic blast against Johnny Rigney that clears the left-field roof.

1920
On May 14, 1920, future Hall of Famer Walter Johnson wins his 300th career game - albeit in less than spectacular fashion. The Washington Senators' ace emerges as the winner in a 9-8 slugfest against the Detroit Tigers.
