Today in Baseball History: May 13th

1993

On May 13, 1993, George Brett of the Kansas City Royals hits his 300th home run. Brett becomes only the sixth player to collect 300 homers and 3,000 hits, joining Hank Aaron, Al Kaline, Willie Mays, Stan Musial, and Carl Yastrzemski.

1989

On May 13, 1989, future Hall of Famer Kirby Puckett ties a major league record by collecting four doubles in a game. Puckett's four extra-baggers launch the Minnesota Twins to a 10-8 win over the Toronto Blue Jays.

1969
On May 13, 1969, Ernie Banks of the Chicago Cubs drives in seven runs and reaches the 1,500-RBI milestone in a 19-0 shellacking of the expansion San Diego Padres. Hard-throwing right-hander Dick Selma earns the win as the Cubs tie a modern day record for the most one-sided shutout in National League history.

1965
On May 13, 1965, California Angels pitcher Dick Wantz dies following surgery for brain cancer. The 25-year-old Wantz had made his debut only one month earlier, pitching one inning in relief in his only major league appearance.

1958

On May 13, 1958, Stan Musial of the St. Louis Cardinals collects his 3,000th hit when he delivers a pinch-hit double against Moe Drabowsky of the Chicago Cubs. Musial becomes the eighth major league player to reach the milestone.

1958
On May 13, 1958, Willie Mays and Daryl Spencer of the San Francisco Giants each hit two home runs and combine for 28 total bases in a 16-9 rout of the Los Angeles Dodgers. Mays' five hits help the Giants set a modern day NL record of 50 total bases in a game.

1955

On May 13, 1955, future Hall of Famer Mickey Mantle blasts home runs from both sides of the plate for the first time in his major league career. The New York Yankee slugger finishes the game with three home runs and drives in all of his team's runs in a 5-2 win over the Detroit Tigers. Mantle hits two home runs left-handed and one right-handed.

1952
On May 13, 1952, minor leaguer Ron Necciai of the Bristol Twins strikes out 27 batters in throwing a 7-0 no-hitter against the Welch Miners. Of the 28 outs that Necciai records, only one - an infield ground out - does not come via a strikeout. Necciai will earn a promotion to the Pittsburgh Pirates later in the season, but will struggle to a 1-6 record and a 7.08 ERA.

1942
On May 13, 1942, Jim Tobin of the Boston Braves almost single-handedly beats the Chicago Cubs by pitching a five-hitter and hitting three consecutive home runs. Tobin becomes the only modern day pitcher to hit three homers in a game.
