2007




On April 15, 2007, on the 60th anniversary of Jackie Robinson"s debut, the entire Dodger team wears uniform #42 in his honor. At least one player on each MLB team wears #42, after Ken Griffey Jr. had asked commissioner Bud Selig for permission to do so. In Oakland, Yankee closer Mariano Rivera, who is the only major leaguer still grandfathered in to wear #42, allows a three-run walk-off homer to Marco Scutaro of the A"s.

1997
On April 15, 1997, commissioner Bud Selig announces that Major League Baseball will retire uniform #42 in honor of Jackie Robinson. The decision comes on the 50th anniversary of Robinson"s historic debut with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947. Players who are currently wearing the number are allowed to continue to do so until they retire.

1987
On April 15, 1987, Juan Nieves pitches the first no-hitter in the history of the Milwaukee Brewers. Nieves strikes out seven in shutting down the Baltimore Orioles, 7-0. Glenn Braggs, Greg Brock, and Dale Sveum support Nieves with home runs.

1977
On April 15, 1977, Hank Aaron becomes the first player to have his uniform number retired by two teams. The Atlanta Braves retire his No. 44 during a pre-game ceremony. The Milwaukee Brewers had previously retired Aaron's number.

1976
On April 15, 1976, the New York Yankees defeat the Minnesota Twins, 11-4, in the first game at the newly renovated Yankee Stadium. Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, Whitey Ford, and the widows of Lou Gehrig and Babe Ruth take part in pre-game ceremonies at the Stadium, which had been closed for the 1974 and '75 seasons…

1972




On April 15, 1972, Reggie Jackson of the Oakland A's becomes the first major leaguer to sport a mustache since Wally Schang of the Philadelphia Athletics in 1914. Jackson starts a trend with the A's, as owner Charlie Finley eventually encourages all of his players to grow mustaches. By the end of the season, the World Champion A's will become known as the "Mustache Gang."

1968
On April 15, 1968, the New York Mets and Houston Astros play the longest game in National League history at the Astrodome. The game ends in the 24th inning when the Astros score an unearned run on Al Weis' error. The 1-0 game lasts a total of six hours and six minutes.

1958
On April 15, 1958, the San Francisco Giants host the first West Coast game in major league history. The Giants defeat the rival Los Angeles Dodgers in front of 23,448 fans at Seals Stadium. Orlando Cepeda and Daryl Spencer hit home runs in the Giants' 8-0 win…

1954
On April 15, 1954, Hank Aaron collects the first hit of his major league career. The Milwaukee Braves' rookie goes 2-for-5 in a 7-6 win over the St. Louis Cardinals.

1947
On April 15, 1947, 28-year-old Jackie Robinson makes an historic debut for the Brooklyn Dodgers, becoming the first African-American to play major league baseball in the 20th century. Robinson goes 0-for-3 in his debut but flawlessly handles 11 chances at first base against the Boston Braves.

1946
On April 15, 1946, Mel Ott hits the 511th - and final - home run of his career. The 37-year-old slugger connects against Oscar Judd of the Philadelphia Phillies. Ott's milestone blast lifts the New York Giants to an 8-4 victory at the Polo Grounds…
