HR de Blanco clave en victoria de Filis vs. Marineros


FILADELFIA -- El venezolano Andrés Blanco bateó su primer jonrón en tres, mientras que Jerome Williams lanzó pelota de tres hits para que los Filis de Filadelfia derrotasen el lunes 4-1 a los Marineros de Seattle.

Blanco la sacó en el quinto para producir tres carreras en el quinto ante el relevista Dominic Leone, dándole a los Filis una ventaja 4-0. El infielder venezolano no bateaba un jonrón desde el 1 de julio de 2011, cuando lo hizo para Texas ante los Marlins.

En su segunda apertura tras ser adquirido por los Filis, Williams (1-0) permitió una carrera y tres hits en algo más de siete innings.

El zurdo cubano Roenis Elías (9-10) permitió una carrera y tres hits en cuatro innings al abrir por los Marineros. Tuvo que sudar para salir de apuros al conceder seis boletos y golpear a un bateador.

Por los Marineros, el dominicano Robinson Canó de 4-0. El cubano Kendrys Morales de 3-0.

Peralta fue el héroe de Cardenales en extrainnings

Hairston fue el héroe de Nacionales en extrainnings

On August 18, 1967, Boston Red Sox star Tony Conigliaro is hit in the face with a fastball thrown by California's Jack Hamilton. Having suffered a fractured left eye socket and broken cheekbone, "Tony C." will not return until 1969.

On August 18, 1934, future Hall of Famer Roberto Clemente is born in Carolina, Puerto Rico. In 1955, Clemente will arrive in the major leagues with the Pittsburgh Pirates, and will hit .317 with 240 home runs over an 18-year career. In 1973, Clemente will gain posthumous election to the Hall of Fame.

Ortiz llega a 400 jonrones con los Medias Rojas


BOSTON -- David Ortiz se convirtió en el tercer jugador en la historia de los Medias Rojas que conecta 400 jonrones con el equipo.

El toletero dominicano sacudió un jonrón en el tercer inning del juego del sábado contra Houston, un batazo que cayó en la primera hilera de las gradas del jardín central del Fenway Park.

Ortiz lleva 458 jonrones en su carrera, una que comenzó con los Mellizos de Minnesota.

On August 17, 1987, Oakland A's designated hitter Reggie Jackson hits his 563rd and final career home run. The longtime slugger will retire at the end of the season and will win election to the Hall of Fame in 1993.

1980
On August 17, 1980, future Hall of Famer George Brett goes 4-for-4 with five RBI to lift his batting average to .401, and extend his hitting streak to 29 games. Brett hit .390 in 1980, the highest mark in 39 years.

1974
On August 17, 1974, the Cleveland Indians purchase former National League batting champion Rico Carty from the Mexican League. Carty will hit .363 for the Indians over the balance of the season.

1973
On August 17, 1973, Willie Mays of the New York Mets hits the final home run of his Hall of Fame career. Mays blasts No. 660 against Cincinnati Reds left-hander Don Gullett. Mays will retire after the Mets fall to the Oakland A's in the World Series.

1960
On August 17, 1960, The Sporting News names Ted Williams "Player of the Decade" for the 1950s. From 1950 to 1959, "The Splendid Splinter" won two batting titles, led the American League in slugging percentage twice, and also led the league in walks twice.

1933
On August 17, 1933, Lou Gehrig plays in his 1,308th consecutive game, breaking the record held by another New York Yankee, Everett Scott. Gehrig will extend the streak to 2,130 games, a record that will stand until it is surpassed by Cal Ripken, Jr. of the Baltimore Orioles in 1995.

1920
On August 17, 1920, 29-year-old Cleveland Indians shortstop Ray Chapman dies in a hospital, one day after being beaned by New York Giants pitching star Carl Mays. Chapman, whose skull was fractured by the pitch, becomes the first and only major league player to die from an injury sustained on the playing field.
