Esa aserción la hemos escuchado en una gran cantidad de ocasiones en el pasado pero en realidad no ha hecho quedar nada de mal a su Dirigente Clint Hurdle.

Polanco es el primer jugador en la historia de los Piratas en embasarse en sus primeros 12 partidos en su carrera. Por cierto, conectó de hit en sus primeros 11 partidos pero este pasado domingo la racha de indiscutibles le fue detenida por los Cachorros de Chicago.

A estas lineas, Polanco conecta para .345 de promedio, un cuadrangular, seis carreras impulsadas y 11 anotadas. Por cierto, ese jonronazo fue ganador de un partido en entradas extras frente a los Marlins en Miami. La racha de embasamientos podría extenderse en visita a los Rays de Tampa Bay.

Los últimos en obtener en las mayores tal gran honor lo fueron los lanzadores el cubano José Fernández de los Marlins de Miami el año pasado en la nacional y el quisqueyano Neftalí Féliz en el 2010 de los Rangers de Texas en la Liga Americana.

Que más dará de chacharear Gregory Polanco, solo el tiempo nos dirá.

LOS YANKEES EN CRISIS DE IDENTIDAD DE JUEGO

Cuando la gente dice "ni la chancleta -prefiero este nombre a sombra- de lo que fueron…" están ratificando lo que se conoce como la crisis de identidad del juego, que puede ser individual o colectiva en el deporte.

"Los Yankees no son los Yankees en Nueva York y en todas partes", como escribía el veterano cronista, Jefe Editor deportivo de Información en Cuba, venerable Yiyo Jiménez q.e.p.d, hace más de 53 años.

Era la época en que los Mulos de Manhattan más que ganar apabullaban, abusaban y, que conste, durante la década de los 50's, los Dodgers de Brooklin tenían un club más fuerte en jugadores, pero les faltaba la determinación y el coraje con que jugaban los inquilinos del Bronx.

Eran tiempos de cláusula de reserva, de bonos irrisorios si se comparan con los de hoy, de salarios por temporada, de prohibición de acercamientos entre peloteros ni aunque fueran hermanos y estuvieran en clubes diferentes, sin contratos a largo plazo, de 154 juegos cada temporada, de una sola postemporada, la Serie Mundial; de beisbol en el Este y un poco al centro, de pitchers que no perdían un juego golpeando a un bateador con bases llenas ni tirando un wild con la que derrotaba a su equipo en tercera; tampoco de peloteros jugando cartas en el clubhouse, mientras el equipo se desangraba buscando pasar a la prueba siguiente y ni soñar con un colectivo bebiendo cerveza y comiéndose todas las alitas búfalo de Boston, en medio de una racha perdedora que dio pena, ni de esteroides ni de un comisionado propietario…

Tampoco de agencias de jugadores que preservan puestos inmerecidos y bloquea la competencia del novato que llaman de las Menores, que, aunque meta un par de líneas como sustituto del propietario, cuando este regrese de la vacación llamada lista de enfermos deberá volver a la Internacional o a la Asociación Americana. Antes se quedaba el recluta y el "frágil pelotero" o se dirigía a otro club desde los waivers, a Triple A o paraba en la Independiente de Canadá.

Si algo fue una bendición para el beisbol y lo será siempre, fue que en 1925 no existía el relajo y la basura articulada, agresiva y liberal de hoy, si no Columbia Lou no hubiera debutado ese año y quizás nunca ¿Se imagina el beisbol sin Gehrig? Eriza pensarlo.

No había millones, muy bueno para los jugadores y muy malo para el público y para el pasatiempo, porque, el 90 % de las estrellas que aceden a contratos fabulosos (casi todos, si un novato de róster de 25 en el banco gana 500,000 por ver el juego desde el dugout) no meten el cuerpo sino el primero y el último año como auto-promoción de su mercancía en un bazar árabe.

Y antes todos los peloteros querían jugar para los Yankees, aprender con los Yankees y contribuir a la historia del juego ganando con ellos.

Hoy, tal vez haga más de 15 años, los peloteros tienen hasta cláusulas que prohiben ser cambiados a los Yankees y solo han accedido algunos a ser enviados a la novena, cuando ya no les queda clase ni gracia para entretener y complacer a un público tan conflictivo y exigente como el de Nueva York. Así vimos a Randy Johnson en franela a rayas, de la que se desenfundó más rápido que sus rectas.

La expansión y la forma escalonada como han llegado al beisbol por ventas y reventas de clubes, del Oeste sobre todo, millonarios con tanto dinero como la gerencia neoyorquina, ha colocado al club insignia en una situación delicada, porque tienen que competir contra 4 o 5 franquicias por un jugador, que pudiera escuchar ofertas mucho mejores que las propuestas de ellos y eso es lo que sucede.

Sin sucursales, sin un buen equipo de scouts y con un General Manager pésimo, nadie sabe cómo esa novena no se ha desinflado completamente, porque este año lucharon hasta un par de días antes.

Tienen fisuras en todas las posiciones, porque hasta Jeter debe ir pensando en irse, sin el líder que han tenido históricamente (el shortstop el último y decente) para enfrentar con éxito la próxima campaña y sin la cantidad de jugadores para agencia libre que pudieran contentar algunas posiciónes, porque necesitan jugadores a lo yankee para todas, hasta CC Sabathia se les convirtió en un pitcher temperamental por contagio del miedo a perder, que, se ha demostrado, hoy es más fácil que caigan y que no se puedan levantar que lo contrario.

¿La culpa? desde hace 42 años la familia Steinbrenner maneja la franquicia con sello personal, es decir, creando estados de opinión desagradables e injustos contra jugadores que resultaron inmortales, tapando goteras con jugadores liquidados que, por su personalidad, no pueden estar en el club, porque los aplasta el dinero y la obligación de rendir para lo que casi vale otro equipo.

Alex Rodríguez, Texeira… son ejemplos de cómo se escoge mal cuando se aplica la regla de "hago lo que me da la gana porque el dinero es mío y la novena también".

Tal vez los Steinbrenner deberían cansarse y vender el club, a ver si algún buen samaritano decente, práctico-operativo y astuto hace lo que parece imposible: reconstruir el Imperio.

Como que no va a suceder que vendan, los Yankees apestan, están condenados al hazmerreir con una plantilla que mete más miedo que Drácula si de verdad saliera.

Esos no son los Yankees, desde hace 49 años ya no son lo que fueron… a pesar de los destellos de los campeonatos del 96-99, no lo son.

Víctor Martínez: de actor secundario a protagonista en Detroit
