Gwynn fue un subestimado

ORLANDO -- Pese a ser reconocido como uno de los grandes bateadores de todos los tiempos, lamentablemente, el fenecido Tony Gwynn también podría ser considerado un gigante entre los más brillantes subestimados del juego.

No mal entiendan. En todas las referencias sobre Gwynn, casi seguro habrán cientos de elogios recordando sus 3,141 hits, ocho cetros de bateo, promedio vitalicio de .338 y 15 selecciones al Juego de Estrellas. La realidad es que todo eso alcanzó mayor importancia después que se retiró en 2001.

Mi imagen más memorable de Gwynn no es de su jonrón contra David Wells en el primer partido de la Serie Mundial de 1998, su deslizamiento en el plato para superar a Iván Rodríguez impulsado por un doble del dominicano Moisés Alou en la décima entrada del Juego de Estrellas de 1994 ni ninguna de sus líneas al lado contrario del terreno, que fue su marca registrada durante 20 años en las ligas mayores.

Al Gwynn que recuerdo fue al que cubrí en el glorioso, y caliente, fin de semana del Salón de la Fama del 2007 en Cooperstown, Nueva York. La realidad de los Reales de KC

Esta era la realidad la última vez que los Reales de Kansas City se vieron en una postemporada.

1. El presidente de los Estados Unidos era Ronald Reagan.

Ha llovido mucho desde 1985, cuando los Reales ganaron la Serie Mundial y, partiendo de la premisa que han tenido solo dos temporadas ganadoras en las últimas dos décadas, el concepto de verlos al tope de la División Central de la Liga Americana y en medio de un mes de junio con marca de 12-4 -- a medio juego por encima de los temidos Tigres de Detroit y su elenco de estrellas probadas -- es algo foráneo, pero al menos refrescante.

1890 On June 20, 1890, Cumberland Posey is born in Homestead, PA. First as a player and then later as manager and team owner, for 35 years Posey was the driving force behind the Homestead Grays, one of the most successful teams in Negro league history. In 2006, he earned election to the Hall of Fame.
