2007
On April 17, 2007, members of the Washington Nationals wear Virginia Tech baseball caps in their game against the Atlanta Braves, to honor the victims of the deadly shooting on that school"s campus the day before.

2007
On August 27, 2005, Tom Glavine, Greg Maddux, and John Smoltz, former teammates and aces for the Atlanta Braves for several years, all pitch on the same day for the first time. Glavine toes the rubber for the New York Mets, losing 2-1 in San Francisco; Maddux, pitching for the Cubs, loses by the same score to the Marlins in Wrigley Field; and Smoltz, still with the Braves, earns a 8-4 victory over the Brewers in Milwaukee. While with the Braves from 1993-2002, the trio won 439 games and helped Atlanta to ten consecutive division titles.

2007
On April 17, 2007, Alex Rodriguez hits his eighth homer of the young season, in the Yankees" 12th game. He becomes just the third player to hit eight homers in the first 12 games or less, joining Mike Schmidt (1976) and Luis Gonzalez (2001).

1976
On April 17, 1976, Mike Schmidt of the Philadelphia Phillies blasts four consecutive home runs in a wild 18-16 win over the Chicago Cubs. Schmidt adds a single and drives in eight runs in helping the Phillies come back from a 13-2 deficit at Wrigley Field.

1960
On April 17, 1960, the Cleveland Indians trade American League home run king, Rocky Colavito, to the Detroit Tigers for the league's defending batting champion, Harvey Kuenn. The trade is especially unpopular with Indians fans, who regard Colavito as one of their favorite players.

1956
On April 17, 1956, three future Hall of Famers make their major league debuts. Luis Aparicio of the Chicago White Sox, Don Drysdale of the Brooklyn Dodgers and Frank Robinson of the Cincinnati Reds play the first games of their brilliant careers.

On April 17, 1956, Mickey Mantle of the New York Yankees hits a pair of tape measure home runs against Camilo Pascual at Griffith Stadium. Both long balls are estimated at over 500 feet. The Yankees and Washington Senators combine for six home runs in a 10-4 Opening Day victory for the Bombers.

1955
On April 17, 1955, 20-year-old Roberto Clemente makes his major league debut for the Pittsburgh Pirates. Playing at venerable Forbes Field, the future Hall of Famer picks up the first of his 3,000 career hits against Johnny Podres of the Brooklyn Dodgers. Clemente's Pirates lose the game, 10-3.

1953
On April 17, 1953, Mickey Mantle hits what is believed to be the longest home run in the history of Washington's Griffith Stadium. The New York Yankees' slugger blasts a mammoth 565-foot shot against Chuck Stobbs of the Washington Senators.

1947
On April 17, 1947, future Hall of Famer Jackie Robinson of the Brooklyn Dodgers collects his first major league hit-a single against Boston Braves pitcher Glenn Elliot. Robinson's Dodgers defeat the Braves, 12-6, at Ebbets Field.

1934
On April 17, 1934, Casey Stengel makes his managerial debut as the Brooklyn Dodgers take on the Boston Braves at Ebbets Field. Stengel, who will gain far more fame as the skipper of the New York Yankees, loses his first game, 8-7.

1929
On April 17, 1929, future Hall of Famer Babe Ruth marries actress Claire Hodgson in a ceremony that is held at five o' clock in the morning. Playing the next day, the New York Yankees' slugger hits a home run against Red Ruffing of the Boston Red Sox and tips his cap in the direction of Claire, who is seated in the stands.
